Calling  Iltrida, Indíbil and Mandonio defended the city of the carthaginians and romen. In the year 205 went in call  Ilerda and at the end of the III century was strengthened for a bridge of stone that was wasted for bands of Germanic barbarians. Towards the year 716 the city was busy for the |musulmanes|, passing  to name Lareda. In 1149 , it is taken for Ramón Berenguer IV and of Ermengol VI of Urgel. In the 1300  creates the first university of the corona of Aragon, actives until 1717 , when Philip V arrange your closing and destruction of the university small town. Of this period  keeps the ancient cathedral or Seu Vella. The railway reaches to the city in 1860. Nowadays it disposes of 7 bridges on the Segre river without counting the future bridge it will unite c/prince of Viana with Av.
